Das Deutsche ProgrammIm Jahre 1987 begann das Deutsche Programm in der Sunset Schule. Ungefähr 150 Schüler nehmen an ihm teil. Der Deutschunterricht beginnt schon mit den Erstklässlern und endet mit dem 5. Schuljahr. In jeder Stufe werden täglich 2-1/2 Stunden Deutsch von Deutschlehrern erteilt, die Deutsch als Muttersprache sprechen. Literatur, Geschichte, Erdkunde und Musik sind Fächer, die in deutscher Sprache gelehrt werden. Während des Unterrichtes wird nur Deutsch gesprochen. Die Schüler werden in kleine Gruppen aufgeteilt, um bessere Ergebnisse in der Sprache zu erzielen. Der aufgestellte Lehrplan orientiert sich an den Richtlinien Nordrhein-Westfalens. In ihm sind auch die Lehrziele des Dade County School Systems eingearbeitet. Die darin vorgeschriebenen Ziele werden erreicht, da sich die Schüler täglich von 8:30 bis 16:00 Uhr in der Schule befinden. In der 5. Klasse wird ein zweiwöchiger Aufenthalt in einer Kleinstadt in Deutschland angeboten. Die Kinder aus Miami werden dann bei deutschen Familien untergebracht und nehmen während ihres Aufenthaltes am Unterricht des Gymnasiums teil. Eine sehr aktive Elternorganisation (GIPA) leistet den Lehrern und auch den Schülern Beistand. Manche helfen bei der Förderung von gewissen Schülern und andere leiten eine Ausleihbibliothek. Diese Elternorganisation hilft auch bei traditionellen Festen, wie Karneval und St. Martin, beim Oktoberfest und Nikolaustag. |
The German ProgramThe German Program at Sunset Elementary was established in 1987. Presently approximately 150 students are enrolled in the program which spans first through fifth grade. The program provides two and a half hours of immersion language instruction daily taught by native German speakers. Students study language, literature, science, social studies, history, geography and music in German. The children learn to read, write, speak and think in German. English is not spoken during the German portion of the day. Language classes are kept small to facilitate learning. The school uses the curriculum guidelines from the state of North Rhine Westfalia. Textbooks, workbooks, consultants, and support are provided by the German government. At the same time the program meets all of Dade County's school objectives and requirements. This is accomplished through an extended school day from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. In fifth grade the program culminates with a two week visit to Germany. The children stay with host families and attend a German School. In addition a very active parent organization, GIPA, provides additional support to the teachers and students. Parents staff a German lending library and provide tutoring. GIPA also organizes Karneval, St. Martin and Oktoberfest celebrations for the children. |
