La Escuela Español

An Overview of the Spanish Curriculum at Sunset Elementary School
To fulfill the requirements of the Spanish curriculum as well as the language competencies, we developed the following strategies:
  1. students are placed according to their language performance (native speakers and non-native speakers)
  2. social studies, geography and science are introduced to all students
  3. language competencies (oral skills, reading, writing and vocabulary) are integrated into the daily Spanish lessons
The flexibility within our program allows the teachers at Sunset Elementary School to meet the needs of students who enter the program from different backgrounds. The majority do not speak Spanish at all, some speak the language with various degrees of fluency, but have not learned to read or write Spanish. Non-Spanish speakers are first instructed with SL techniques and gradually, as they gain command of the language, they are asked to meet the requirements of the Spanish curriculum. They are able to move from one level to another according to their progress. Many students join the classes for Spanish speakers, working at grade level, in 4th or 5th grade. While language competencies are taught in Spanish classes, across the board and subject matter competencies are addressed in the homeroom and Spanish content classes. Careful articulation between homeroom and Spanish teachers exists in order to ensure continuity and avoid redundancy.
